Pharmaceutical products can contain residual traces of the solvents that are used in the manufacture of drugs. The residual solvents are not completely removed by practical manufacturing techniques. Their content in pharmaceutical products should be evaluated and drug products should contain no higher levels of residual solvents than those recommended by health authorities, like the FDA.
In this study, the Alpha MOS Fast Dual Gas Chromatograph Electronic Nose is used to rapidly detect and quantify the concentration of 13 of the mostly used solvents in the pharmaceutical industry. The analysis offers a good separation of the compounds in less than 2 minutes. The system also shows a sensitivity which allows detecting concentrations as low as the thresholds defined by international regulations.
