Overview

Instrumental organoleptic testing of pharmaceutical products with Alpha MOS sensing
When formulating oral medicines, scientists face the challenges of masking the bitter taste of active principles or off-odors of some ingredients.  Indeed, odor and taste are key parameters in pharmaceutical oral forms since they determine palatability, patient acceptability and success on the market. Alpha MOS instrumental solutions for measuring and evaluating the odor and taste of medicines are designed to give rapid answer to organoleptic issues in pharmaceutical formulation and pharmaceutical product development.

Formulation taste optimization with an electronic tongue
The Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue is a useful tool to assess the taste masking efficiency of sweeteners, flavors, sweeteners combined with flavors and global pharmaceutical formulations.

Bitterness measurement of active drug by electronic tongue
The Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue can be used for the bitterness measurement of an active drug. The results obtained are more repeatable than those of a sensory panel.

Benchmarking analysis of pharmaceutical tablets by electronic tongue
The Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue can be used to assess the bitterness of drug formulations. The correlation with the results obtained by a sensory panel is excellent.

Testing the bitterness masking efficiency of oral formulations by electronic tongue
The Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue can be used to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of formulations and masking strategies. The method is repeatable and much faster than the use of a human sensory panel.

Optimization of taste matching of placebos with an electronic tongue
The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal formulation of placebos in order to best match the taste of the real medicine. Using the Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue the taste of pharmaceutical formulations containing different bitter compounds at various concentrations could be rapidly tested. The study proved that it is possible to safely develop a taste matching placebo for consistent and reliable clinical trials.

Masking optimization of active principle bitterness by e-tongue
In order to study the optimal masking efficiency in an oral from under development, various active formulations and their corresponding placebos (same formulations without active principle) are analyzed for taste measurement and comparison with the Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue. The ASTREE measurements show a high repeatability. The efficiency of the bitterness masking is evaluated by calculating the taste distance between each formulation and the corresponding placebo. The shortest the distance, the better the masking.

Testing the odor masking efficiency of tablet coating by e-nose
Using the Alpha MOS FOX Electronic Nose it is possible to rapidly screen various tablet formulations and determine the amount of coating which allows to achieve the optimum odor masking.

Alpha MOS ASTREE Electronic Tongue
ASTREE is the key tool for objective and safe taste assessment: taste masking, shelf life studies, taste comparison, etc.
